MY WORK TERMS

Well as you know I am in school attending the Marine Institute. ( To find out more about Nautical Science program click here ). After I complete my schooling I will have to the oral examination with Transport Canada and then I will become a Watachkeeping Mate (WKM)  aboard ships . As part of my schooling I must complete one year of sea experience of 360 days . I currently have 320 days, what that means is that this summer (2004) I will only need 40 days to go. Look out here I come.

This is my first work term vessel

MV Algoport

Motor Vessel Algoport is a 658 ft Self-unloading Bulk Carrier with Home Trade Status. She spends most of her time in the Gulf of St. Lawrence and St. Lawrence River Traveling to places like

Little Narrows, Cape Breton, Nova Scotia for Gypsum

Lower Cove, Newfoundland for Lime Stone

Iles De La Madeleine (Mine Saline), Quebec for Salt

Although it my only have three main destination where it loads cargo, it's not limited to these ports and travels all over delivering the cargo on hand and getting other cargos.

Other Cargo that we carried were:

Iron Ore & Coke

Because of the fact that there where two cadets onboard the Algoport I was the lucky one who got transferred to another vessel.

Motor Vessel Algowest.

Again the Algowest is a Self-unloading Bulk Carrier, but is different in many ways to the Algoport. For on instance Algowest is 730 ft long and was original a Straight Back (Bulk Carrier) and was converted to a self-unloader in 1998.

Our main Cargo for this boat is Salt from Windsor or Goderich to various locations all over the Great Lakes.

Other cargo that we have carried are:

Oats, Iron Ore, Stone, Summer Feed (Stone), Concrete Sand, Silica Sand (for engine block castings - GM or Ford), & Coal

It's now official the MV Algowest was rechristen MV PETER R. CRESSWELL

14 Oct 2001, in Port Weller

Second Work Term

Well once again I spent a roughly 95 days on the

Motor Vessel Algoway

The Algoway is a 650 ft Self-unloading Bulk Carrier.

Because of her size the Algoway is considered a work horse of the fleet along with her two sister ships, going to places where the Larger (longer) ships can't go.

Cargo that we carried was. Salt, Petroleum Coke, Stone, Sand, Ballast, Slag

The vessel that I will be heading on for the summer is the MV Arctic
